If you're shopping for tallow skincare, you've probably encountered products described as tallow balm, whipped tallow, tallow cream and even tallow butter.
That can make choosing your first product confusing.
What's actually different?
And more importantly, which type of tallow product is right for you?
At Hightower Tallow Co., we create both rich tallow balms and softer whipped tallow formulations. While they share the same traditional foundation, their texture and overall formulation can create very different skincare experiences.
Here's what to know before choosing.
What Is a Tallow Balm?
A tallow balm is generally a concentrated, oil-based skincare product built around rendered tallow.
Balms typically have a firmer, denser consistency than whipped products.
When warmed between your fingertips, the balm softens and becomes easy to spread across the skin.
Because many tallow balms contain little or no added water, you usually don't need very much.
A small amount can go a long way.
Our Rosemary & Lemon Botanical Tallow Balm and Lavender & Lemon Botanical Tallow Balm are good examples of this style — dense, concentrated, and botanical-infused from the start.
What Is a Whipped Tallow Cream?
Whipped tallow has a much softer texture.
During formulation, the tallow mixture is whipped, incorporating air and creating a light, fluffy consistency.
Think of the difference between a dense balm and something closer to whipped butter.
The whipped texture doesn't necessarily mean the product is less rich — it simply changes the experience of applying it.
At Hightower, some of our whipped formulations combine botanical-infused tallow with complementary oils such as jojoba, squalane, castor, rosehip and sea buckthorn, depending upon the individual formula.
Our Lavender & Lemon Whipped Tallow Cream is a great place to start if you're curious about the softer texture.
Tallow Balm vs. Tallow Cream: The Quick Difference
Here's the simplest way to think about it:
Tallow Balm
- Dense and concentrated
- Firmer texture
- Melts as you warm it between your fingers
- Excellent when you prefer substantial skincare
- Usually requires only a very small amount
Whipped Tallow Cream
- Soft and fluffy
- Easier to scoop and spread
- Feels lighter because air has been incorporated
- Still rich and concentrated
- Ideal if you prefer a softer skincare texture
Neither is automatically better.
The right choice depends on your skin and the texture you enjoy using.
But Texture Isn't the Whole Story
This is important.
When comparing two tallow products, don't choose solely because one says "balm" and another says "cream."
Read the entire ingredient list.
Two tallow balms from different makers — or even two Hightower balms — can be very different products.
The tallow is only the foundation.
The botanicals, oils, butters and other ingredients determine much of the finished product's character.
That's especially true at Hightower.
Hightower Starts With Botanical-Infused Tallow
At Hightower Tallow Co., we're building something more specific than a traditional tallow company.
We're a Botanical-Infused Tallow Apothecary.
Rather than simply melting tallow and adding fragrance, many of our formulations begin by slowly infusing selected botanicals into the tallow itself.
Depending upon the formula, our apothecary may include:
- Calendula
- Chamomile
- Hibiscus
- Rosehips
- Gotu kola
- Haritaki
- Lavender
- Frankincense
- Myrrh
Some of our infusions continue under gentle warmth for up to eight hours before being carefully strained.
Only then do we begin building the finished balm or whipped formulation.

Why Different Hightower Balms Have Different Ingredients
We don't use one master recipe and simply change the scent.
Different products call for different botanical combinations.
For example, our Night Reset™ Botanical-Infused Tallow Face Balm features botanicals such as rosehips, calendula and gotu kola, while our Rosemary & Rose In-Shower Body Butter features frankincense, myrrh and calendula.
We can then pair the infused tallow with complementary ingredients such as:
- Jojoba oil
- Squalane
- Sea buckthorn oil
- Rosehip oil
- Castor oil
- Vitamin E
- Bakuchiol
That's why reading the complete product description matters.
You're not simply choosing between "balm" and "cream."
You're choosing between formulations.

Which Is Better for Dry-Feeling Skin?
Both can work beautifully as rich moisturizers.
If you prefer something dense and concentrated, you may enjoy a traditional balm.
If you want the richness of tallow but prefer a softer texture, whipped tallow may be more enjoyable.
Whichever you choose, we recommend starting with the ingredient list — not just the product category name.
