A Brief History of Tallow in Soapmaking
Tallow and soap have a long shared history.
For centuries, rendered animal fat — often beef or mutton tallow — was one of the primary ingredients in handcrafted soap. Traditional soapmakers understood that fat and alkali, combined correctly, produced a bar that could cleanse effectively and hold its shape.
Tallow-based soap was practical, durable, and widely used in households across many cultures and generations.
The shift toward mass-produced synthetic soap bars changed that. Detergent-based cleansers and highly processed soap became the norm, and traditional ingredients like tallow gradually disappeared from ingredient lists — or were replaced by their plant-derived equivalents.
Today, a growing number of people are looking back at traditional formulations and asking a straightforward question:
What did those older recipes get right?
What Does Tallow Contribute to Soap?
Tallow contributes several things to a well-formulated soap bar that are worth understanding.
Hardness. Tallow is a solid fat at room temperature. When properly saponified (reacted with lye to create soap), it produces a firm, long-lasting bar that holds its shape well over time. This is one reason tallow soaps tend to last longer in the shower than many softer soap alternatives.
A stable lather. Tallow contributes to a creamy, stable lather that feels substantial without being harsh. This is distinct from the bubbly but sometimes drying lather produced by some detergent-based cleansers.
A cleansing bar that conditions. Because tallow is an emollient-rich fat, a well-made tallow soap can cleanse without stripping the skin of all moisture. This doesn't mean tallow soap is a moisturizer — it is a cleanser — but it means the cleansing experience can feel gentler than some alternatives.
Longevity. A properly cured tallow soap bar is dense and durable. It doesn't dissolve quickly and, with reasonable care, will last significantly longer than many commercially produced alternatives.
Is All Tallow Soap the Same?
Not at all.
Just as we noted in our introduction to tallow skincare, two products with the same key ingredient can be formulated very differently.
Questions worth asking about any tallow soap:
- How was the tallow sourced and rendered?
- Are botanicals infused into the tallow, or added superficially to the finished bar?
- What complementary oils and butters are included in the formula?
- Is the bar handcrafted in small batches or produced at industrial scale?
- Has it been properly cured?
These questions matter more than the presence of tallow on the label alone.
The Hightower Approach to Tallow Soap
At Hightower Tallow Co., our soap begins the same way our other products begin: with the botanical infusion.
Before we formulate a soap bar, we select the botanicals that are appropriate for that specific product. We slowly infuse those dried botanicals into the tallow. We strain it carefully. Only then do we begin the soapmaking process.
This means our soap isn't tallow soap with a botanical theme. It's soap made from botanically infused tallow — which is a different thing entirely.
We then build the rest of the formula around that infused base, incorporating complementary oils and butters chosen to support the purpose of the bar.
The result is a soap that carries our apothecary philosophy all the way through the cleansing step — not just in the leave-on products.

A Note on Shampoo Bars
Tallow's versatility extends to hair care as well.
We use botanically infused tallow as a foundation in our shampoo bar formulations, selecting botanicals with a long history in hair and scalp traditions — including nettle leaf and horsetail — to create bars that bring our apothecary approach to the shower routine.
