That philosophy is at the heart of our botanical-infused tallow skincare.
Among the botanicals we return to again and again are two treasured resins with a remarkable history: frankincense and myrrh.
Rather than simply adding a fragrance inspired by these botanicals, we use frankincense and myrrh resins as part of our slow botanical infusion process in many of our tallow creations.
The result is something distinctly Hightower.
What Is Botanical-Infused Tallow?
Botanical-infused tallow begins with rendered beef tallow and selected herbs, flowers, roots, or resins.
At Hightower Tallow Co., our raw beef suet is sourced from local Louisiana beef farms. We carefully render it before beginning the process of transforming it into our handcrafted skincare.
For many of our creations, botanicals are then slowly warm-infused into the tallow for hours.
This isn't the fastest way to make a tallow balm.
That's precisely the point.
We want the botanical infusion itself to be part of the craft.
After infusion, the botanicals are carefully strained from the tallow. Depending on the formulation, the finished infusion may then be combined with complementary skincare ingredients such as jojoba, squalane, sea buckthorn, castor oil, rosehip oil, vitamin E, bakuchiol, or other thoughtfully selected oils.
Every formula is different because every Hightower creation has its own purpose and character.
Why Frankincense & Myrrh?
Frankincense and myrrh have been treasured for centuries.
Both are aromatic resins harvested from trees, and their use stretches back through ancient traditions, perfumery, ceremonial preparations, and historical beauty practices.
For Hightower, they are especially meaningful.
They represent the meeting place between our old-world apothecary inspiration and modern handcrafted skincare.
Their rich, earthy character also pairs beautifully with many of the botanicals we use, including calendula, chamomile, hibiscus, rosehip, lavender and gotu kola.
Infused Tallow vs. Simply Scented Tallow
This distinction is important.
A tallow product can be scented with essential oils without being botanically infused.
Our botanical infusion process is different.
For applicable Hightower formulations, the actual botanicals or resins spend hours slowly infusing with the tallow before being strained.
Essential oils may still be included in certain finished formulations, but they are not what makes the tallow botanically infused.
The infusion happens first.
It's one of the characteristics that defines our Botanical-Infused Tallow Apothecary.
Why Use Tallow in Skincare?
Tallow creates a rich, concentrated balm with an exceptionally luxurious skin feel.
Because tallow balms contain little or no water depending on the formulation, a small amount can go a surprisingly long way.
We especially love tallow as the foundation for botanical skincare because it allows us to create simple, rich formulations while exploring traditional herbs, flowers and resins through our infusion process.
Instead of starting with a long list of fillers, we begin with the ingredient at the heart of our apothecary: carefully rendered tallow. Then we build from there.

Our infusion philosophy can be found throughout the Hightower collection.
Hightower Botanical Comfort Balm brings together frankincense and myrrh resins with arnica, comfrey and calendula before the infused tallow is finished with complementary oils.
Christy's Creation combines frankincense and myrrh with calendula, chamomile, hibiscus and rosehip for a richly botanical whipped tallow creation.
Hightower Trinity Cream takes another direction, bringing together frankincense and myrrh with haritaki, hibiscus and white pomegranate in a slow infusion before being finished with carefully selected oils.
